Review by Sarah Cheetham for Write Away!
Sofi’s past as a Wrecca is seeping away from her as she becomes more entwined in her new life with Old Father Tid, his grandson Tid and Enderell. She is enchanted by the Guardians’ existence and feels quite at home amongst them. Even her old Wrecca way of speaking has evaporated as if it never was there. A lonely Guardian child, Seth, bounces time out of synch through defying a fundamental rule to Guardian existence by making contact with a human; Sofi is catapulted into an adventure that relies heavily upon her resources. She is forced to re-visit her past, as she embarks on an adventure, with Tid and the outcast Sheldon. Trust, friendship, power and identity are beautifully explored as Sofi must question her past to find out who she really is.
Val Tyler introduces a mystical and deeply enthralling world in The Greenwich Chronicles. The Time Apprentice is sequel to The Time Wreccas , however has a capacity to be read autonomously. Inspired by Greenwich, Val Tyler utilizes an ability to create an imaginative world of magical Guardians, alongside the contrasting outcast existence of the intriguing Wreccas, all co-existing alongside a human world. Tyler weaves a direct link between the Guardian and Wrecca societies, through the character of Sofi which conjures a fascinating sociological perspective on the behaviour and values of two contrasting groups.
The novel is written with clarity handling large complex groupings of characters with a sense of cohesion adeptly expressed for the younger reader. It provides an exhilarating adventure that demands concentration and complete involvement in the story-lines and plot. With strong lead male and female characters this novel could appeal to a wide range of readers, who could identify at different stages with the many emotions and characters that are on show. Tyler also incorporates Old English into her fantasy world, and this adds to the depth of the variety of language used in the novel, making it an incredibly rich and rewarding read.
Val says ' Write Away! is a great site if you want to get ideas for a good read.'
