Submission guidelines

How to present a manuscript for appraisal

  • Please send manuscripts in 12 point text, double-spaced and with normal margins
  • Send loose-leaf pages, i.e. no binders, boxes or staples
  • Include details of your name, phone number and email address. We never release these details to others.
  • We are happy to accept submissions by email, but make a charge of 10p per page for printing.

We are very careful with your manuscript, but please make sure you have a backed-up copy of your own. You should also have previously posted yourself a copy as proof of copyright ownership.

If return of the manuscript is required, please enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope. Bear in mind that our report can be up to about 18 pages long and so you will need to allow for the extra weight. You may well prefer to save yourself the money for return postage. Once you start to make revisions the manuscript will not be of much use to you.

It is a good idea to include a covering letter which tells us what kind of book it is, the intended target audience, any specific concerns you have and what contact you may have already had with agents or publishers. These are not essential details, but they help us focus on the things that matter most to you. You may already have told us some of this by email or phone, but it never hurts to repeat it.

Copy editing

Work that needs copy editing should be presented in the same format as above. However, we would always expect to return your hard copy and so need a stamped addressed envelope.

Fees

Your cheque for the full fee should be included with the manuscript.
